⚔️ Fourth Crusade (1202–1204) 📜 Background and Launch The Fourth Crusade was proclaimed by Pope Innocent III in 1202 with the original goal of recapturing Jerusalem from Muslim control. ✝️ A large number of crusaders gathered in Venice, where they contracted ships from the Venetian Republic for the journey. When they failed to pay the agreed sum, Doge Enrico Dandolo proposed that they instead help Venice capture the Christian city of Zara (Zadar), which had rebelled and sought protection from Hungary. 💰 ⚠️ Detour and the Siege of Constantinople Despite Pope Innocent III forbidding the attack, the crusaders, unaware of the papal ban, captured Zara in 1202. ⚓ In 1203, Byzantine prince Alexios Angelos — son of the deposed emperor Isaac II — promised the crusaders gold, military support, and church union if they helped him reclaim his father’s throne. 🏛️ The crusaders accepted and diverted their campaign to Constantinople. In July 1203, after a siege, the city fell and Alexios IV was installed as co-emperor. 🏰 👑 Alexios’ Reign and Downfall Unable to fulfill his promises, Alexios IV faced growing resentment. In desperation, he ordered sacred relics to be melted down for funds. 💔 This act deeply angered the citizens of Constantinople. In early 1204, he was deposed, imprisoned, and eventually murdered in a palace coup. ⚰️ 🔥 The Sack of Constantinople (1204) Still unpaid and increasingly frustrated, the crusaders launched a second assault on Constantinople in April 1204. After breaking through the city’s defenses, they looted and burned Constantinople for three days. ⛓️ Churches, palaces, and homes were pillaged, and sacred treasures were taken or destroyed. 🕍 🏴 Aftermath and Legacy Following the conquest, the crusaders established the Latin Empire of Constantinople, dividing Byzantine territory among Western lords and Venice. 🏰 The sack permanently weakened the Byzantine Empire, deepened the schism between the Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches, and marked a devastating turning point in Christian history. ⚠️ The Byzantines never fully recovered, and the empire ultimately fell to the Ottomans in 1453. ⚔️ #HistoryTime #jerusalem #historicalfacts #byzantine #crusade #LearnOnTikTok
