I know I’m going to ruffle some feathers with this one… But I think it’s an important conversation to have. Let me say from the beginning that no one is saying that you HAVE to eat your laying hens. If you don’t want to (or need to), that’s great! However, if you’ve had chickens for a few years now and you’re noticing your egg supply going down and your feed bill going up… there’s absolutely nothing wrong with thanking them for everything they’ve provided, and will continue to provide for you (just in a different fashion). It’s what great grandma would have done. We’re facing hard times right now, and it might get even harder. Plus, let’s be real, I think they’re one of the most nourishing things out there. They’ve spent years foraging (hopefully) and have the most amazing golden yellow fat. You’ll never find that in a grocery store chicken!! It’s hard to think about, I get it. Especially if you’re new to chicken keeping. It took me YEARS to get to this point and I do have a few favorites that I keep around for their entire lifespan. However, getting comfortable with this concept has helped reduce my feed bill, provides food security, reduces the spread of disease (by rehoming), and knowing where my food comes from is so so important. What do you think? Are you considering it? I’d love to hear your thoughts! If you’re ready to make this step, but would like some guidance on how to process them humanely, cook them properly (and how to make use of all the parts!), check our my mini course (link in bio)! ♥️
