She lived near the Misasa Bridge in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6, 1945. She was only two years old at the time. She was soon to fall victim to the effects of the bombing. She was at home during the explosion, about a mile (1.6 km) from the impact point. She was a strong, athletic girl until she was twelve. That year, while practicing for a running race, she suddenly felt sick, dizzy, and fell to the ground. By November 1954, chickenpox appeared on her neck and behind her ears, and in January 1955, purple spots began to spread down her legs.
