I highly encourage incorporating First Chapter Friday into your class this year! 📖📚 (If you’ve done it before with your students, definitely leave your experience in the comments!!) Even if you can only do it every other Friday or once a month, it’s one of the most effective ways I’ve found to spark student interest in a variety of books. How it works: 1) Choose a high-interest book to read aloud. Make sure it’s a title students can easily access—either from your classroom library or the school library. Read the first chapter (or a portion of it) aloud to your students. I aim to stop at a cliffhanger if possible and read with lots of drama to build suspense and engagement. 2) You can have students complete a follow-up activity (there are great options on Teachers Pay Teachers), but I prefer to have them simply clear their desks and listen. If the first chapter is available online, I project it on the screen so students can follow along as I read. 3) Log it: After the reading, students record the book title in their “First Chapter Friday” log. This gives them a running list of potential reads when they’re not sure what to pick next. 4) If you notice a book generating a lot of interest, try to track down multiple copies. Over the years, I’ve built up 3–5 copies of some of my most popular First Chapter Friday picks to get them into students’ hands as quickly as possible. It is cool to see the books get passed around. Some years, we’ve had 40+ students read the First Chapter Friday book.
