But modern genetics complicates that older political use: ancient DNA shows that Avar and Hungarian Conquest-period elites did carry eastern steppe-related ancestry, while modern Hungarians are genetically much closer to neighboring Central Europeans, with only low Central or Inner Asian ancestry remaining overall (Csősz et al., 2016; Bíró et al., 2015; Maróti et al., 2022).
