@ambersaussies: Things to train your dog to be the perfect take-anywhere patio pup ⤵️ ➡️ A bombproof down stay command. This is the FOUNDATION of having a well-behaved pup in public. They should be able to settle and be calm anywhere you go. You can’t enjoy that mimosa or coffee on the patio if you’re wrestling an overexcited dog! I especially love this because I can leave my dogs outside in a down and go inside to order my drinks real quick (always attach them to a sturdy table or chair as a backup). ➡️ Ignoring strangers and other dogs. Again, suuuuper important for being out in public!! I can’t say it enough: your dog does *not* need to meet every dog they see, plus not every dog is friendly and this could quickly lead to a dog fight where you could be liable. Not every person likes dogs either, so respect their space by not letting your dog rush up to everyone. If you have a dog that doesn’t like being approached by strangers, ADVOCATE for their space. “No, we’re training right now” is always a good response in this situation. ➡️ Expose them to weird surfaces and different places. You can’t expect them to be calm and go everywhere with if they’ve never experienced any place besides your home and the park. Train them in a parking lot, in dog friendly stores like Home Depot, downtown, all over! Go at their pace and slowly build up the distractions.
