@thehomesteadingrd: One of the biggest questions that I had when first starting to raise meat birds was “what should I feed them?” 🤷🏻♀️ Of course, organic seems like an easy choice, but what about the rest? Meat birds grow a lot faster than typical layers, so they need a higher protein to support this growth. Here’s what I do for our Rudd Rangers: 🍗21-22% protein the first 2-3 weeks 🍗Then, back off to 19-20% protein for the rest of the time This gives them a little boost during the intense growth early on, but then prevents them from growing too fast later. Again, there’s no need to remove the feed at night like for the freaky fast growing Cornish Cross. There are many other things to consider when it comes to feed like: 🍗Do you want it to be medicated? 🍗How much feed do I need? 🍗What about soy free? Corn free? Does it matter? 🍗What about raising dual-purpose breeds? Do they need to be fed differently? 🍗Where is the best place to find organic broiler feed? (it can be tricky to find!) I dig into all of these topics in-depth (plus SO much more!) in my new course “Raising Pastured Meat Chickens: From Chick to Drumstick” and it’s currently OPEN for enrollment for only $97! This is the lowest the price will ever be and the doors CLOSE on 5/9, so don’t wait! 🙌🏼 Click the link in my bio to check it out! 💫 #pasturedpoultry #chickentractor #broilerchickens #broilers #raiseyourownfood #raiseyourownmeat #chickenfeed #homesteading #selfsufficientliving #selfsufficiency

What’s the bag of food called you feed your meat birds with? Is it the same as what you feed you laying birds?

We did 50 red and 50 whites together, seen no difference in how they eat. We find a 12 on/off cycle works best for us, we want them on pasture longer

What’s in the feed you buy? Cracked corn for sure, or at least from what I see - do you know what else? Thank you 😊

I like the idea of reducing the protein level though, something I recently learnt from growing out quail
