URHONIGBE COMMUNITY ON THE VERGE OF ISOLATION FROM EDO STATE AND NIGERIA Urhonigbe, a community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, is gradually becoming cut off from the rest of Edo State and Nigeria due to deteriorating infrastructure and government neglect. Urhonigbe community is located between Edo and Delta States, sharing borders with several Delta communities—Abavo to the north, and Umutu, Obiaruku, and Abraka to the south. Urhonigbe community is richly endowed with natural resources, including oil and gas, silica sand, timber, rubber plantations, and fertile agricultural land. The road highlighted in the video attached to this article connects key towns and cities such as Warri, Abraka, Obiaruku, Umutu, Urhonigbe, Abavo, Agbor, Ebele, and terminates at Ewu, along the Benin–Okene–Abuja expressway. This road has immense economic importance and movement across Edo and Delta States, and Nigeria in general. I must acknowledge the efforts of former Delta State Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, who played a pivotal role in rehabilitating this road during his tenure. Successive Delta State governments have also made commendable efforts to keep the road motorable. However, it is disheartening that the once famous Agbor–Urhonigbe–Abraka–Warri road has been completely cut off for the past seven years, with no visible signs of reconstruction. Even more troubling is the inaction from past Edo State Government which has historically failed to prioritize road infrastructure within its jurisdiction. This neglect, might be the reason why Delta State often encroaches into Edo territory. Haven said that, here is another question to consider, What exactly is the role of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in Edo State? Why has the NDDC continuously failed to deliver tangible projects in Edo while investing massively in other Niger Delta states? Could this be due to the seeming passivity of our people, particularly in Edo South? I therefore call on the leadership of the NDDC to urgently prioritize this road project and ensure it is included in its next budget for the benefit of both Edo, DeltaandNigeriain general. It would be an aberration on my part if I failed to call out the Edo south representatives both at the National, state and local government level, it's behooves on you all to work in synergy with the relevant authorities in ensuring this vital route is fix.
