Meet the California Two-Spot Octopus! At the Casino Point Dive Park, they can often be found during the day hiding in rocky crevices or under the edges of pilings that remain from the old Diving Bell. At night these fascinating creatures are much more active, moving sinuously from place to place as they hunt. They are so-named due to the iridescent blue eye-like spots on the web of their mantle which are thought to intimidate predators. Octopus have an amazing ability to camouflage themselves, blending seamlessly into the environment around them. They expand and contract their skin, allowing it to reflect wavelengths of light which are prevalent in their habitat and produce disruptive patterns. During late winter and early spring, females lay up to 150,000 small white eggs, tending them for two to four months (as in the first photo) until they hatch and siphoning cool water over the eggs. During this time, she reportedly does not feed and may die around the time the eggs hatch. They live approximately 2-3 years and grow to about two feet. The Two-Spot Octopus feed on crustaceans, mollusks, snails and small fish. They stalk their prey, crawling along the bottom with their tentacles and subduing it by biting down with their sharp beak. To eat species with protective shells, the octopus bores a small hole through the shell and injects a paralyzing venom. They may fall victim themselves to the bite of an eel or scorpionfish, but if they lose an arm, they have the ability to regrow it. This is Scuba, by Design. . . . . @Love Catalina Island #CatalinaIsland #octopus #fish #scubadiving #scubadiver #scuba #diving #dive #diver #ocean #marinelife #underwaterphotography #naturephotography #wildlifephotography #adventure #adventuretime #lifeofadventure #travel
