Have you ever checked your engine oil? Opening your hood once or twice a month has a lot of benefits, even if you know nothing about cars! By looking at the oil and everything else under the hood, you'll get a good baseline for what everything is supposed to look like. If anything seems out of place, discolored, leaking, or otherwise suspicious, take the car to the mechanic. In best case scenario, you'll catch a problem before it escalates. Worst case, you'll get an extra check-up and have your concerns put to rest. Once/twice a month is a baseline. You'll never go wrong checking it more often, but since so many people don't check their oil at all because they're overwhelmed or just busy, at least once a month is a good starting point.
