Going into our game against Clemson, we were unsure if the team would dance at all, let alone do an in-game dance before a pitch.   We met with the team the day before our game and asked if the guys were open to what we call a 3-2-2 or a 6-2-2 where in either the third inning or sixth inning before the second pitch to the second batter, the pitcher, shortstop, second baseman and third baseman do a full dance before the pitch.   When we first asked the players nothing was said and then I reframed the question and asked is there any songs you guys would really like to do? And then one player started laughing and I said, “What do you got?” He said he can’t really say it and I said, “Don’t worry it’s a safe environment.” He then shared what he called the twerk song and started demonstrating it in the dugout.   Once I heard the players excitement and he said that he would teach it to the other guys, I immediately said, “Let’s do it.”   We were so close to not having them do a dance at all. And If all the players stayed quiet and didn’t speak out, this dance that has over 50 million views would have never happened.   What people don’t realize is that our idea culture in our organization is our secret sauce. We believe great ideas come from anyone and everyone and we aren’t afraid to try anything.   With Clemson, we wanted to foster that same mindset. If the players had ideas, we wanted to make them happen. We were going to do everything we can to encourage them and make them feel comfortable sharing, and ultimately doing during the game.   We’ve learned that buy in is everything and if someone believes in an idea and they are excited to execute it, then the chances of it being successful is dramatically higher.   As leaders, we need to be open to ideas from everyone and make it a safe environment for anyone to share. That’s how the magic happens.
