@ourbravehearts: WHAT IS MATRESCENCE? Oooohhh…questions like this have me pulling up a chair and settling in for some great conversations! Matrescence is the name given to the transition a woman goes through when becoming a mother. It doesn’t just happen once, it happens every time you have a child and according to Dr. Aurelie Athan, “arguable lasts a lifetime”. Makes sense to me - I’ll always be growing into my constantly evolving motherhood. Learning about Matrescence has helped me understand that the identify shifts I went through (but felt so alone in) are a huge part of what needed to happen as I became a mother. There is such power in knowledge and when mothers can learn and understand that what they are going through is as hard as it feels, that it’s not all in their heads, that there are real physical, social, spiritual, hormonal and cultural changes that occur as we move from being the woman we were to the mothers we’re becoming.
