Luca had fevers for about a week and a half, he was lethargic, and not acting like himself. He was born with something called TAM which can be a precursor to leukemia and he has Down syndrome (higher chance of developing leukemia). I was in Target one night thinking about his symptoms, I couldn’t let it go, I thought he had leukemia. I decided the next morning I would take him to the ER to get all the tests run to figure it out. I couldn’t deny the feelings I felt that something was really wrong, mothers intuition is so real. I brought him in, explained what was going on and asked for the tests, the doctor refused, he said that Luca didn’t look sick enough to justify it. I told him I wanted to speak with someone else, he got another doctor, this doctor was a mom, she came in and said “if your mama gut thinks this, you have to trust it, let’s run the tests.” We ran the tests. It came back that he had Covid which was a huge relief, but then it came back that his blood counts were significantly off, they wanted us to followup with hemotology oncology, my heart sank because I knew what was coming. Two weeks later, we did followup testing that eventually led to us discovering very early that he had AML leukemia. Because we caught it early and started treatment so early his prognosis is great. Mamas advocate. Stand up for your babies and keep going until you find someone who will listen to you, because of that second doctor trusting me, Luca will get better quicker and we got to bypass a lot of the horrible symptoms that come with the initial diagnosis of leukemia. We also had time to prepare and could slowly figure it all out instead of everything being heightened because of the severity of the situation.
