@mrs_babcock: ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿผโ€๐ŸผHow do I know if my Twins are getting enough milk at the breast?! ๐Ÿ. ๐–๐ž๐ญ ๐๐ข๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ ๐Ÿ’› What goes in must come out. Wet diapers are an excellent indication of hydration status. During the first week of life, there is a pattern for wet diapers. ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 1: 1 wet diaper ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 2: 2 wet diapers ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 3: 3 wet diapers ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 4: 4 wet diapers ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 5+ : 6+ heavy wet diapers with clear or pale yellow urine. From 5 days onward, we want to see 6-8+ heavy wet diapers in 24 hours. ๐Ÿ. ๐Ÿ’ฉ ๐ƒ๐ข๐š๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ Again, what comes in must come out. During the first week of life, the pattern for dirty diapers is as follows: ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 1 & 2: 1-2 ๐Ÿ–ค or dark ๐Ÿ’š poop ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 3 & 4: 3 ๐Ÿ’š/๐ŸคŽ/๐Ÿ’› poops ๏ปฟ๏ปฟDay 5+: 3+ ๐Ÿ’› seedy stools. The stools will literally look mustard yellow with tiny seeds. From Day 5 onward, we want to see 3+ seedy ๐Ÿ’› poops! ๐Ÿ‘. ๐–๐ž๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ ๐ ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿผ Weight gain is a good indication if our babies are getting enough. Initially, your twins may lose 7-8% or more after birth. After day 3-4, we would expect our babies to begin gaining weight again. We want our babies to be back to birth weight by 2 weeks old. In general, babies should double their birth weight by 4-6 months and triple their birth weight by their first birthday. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ In the first four months of life, we would expect babies to gain 5-8 oz a week. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ After 4 months of age, weight gain slows a bit, averaging 3.25-4.5 oz a week until 6 months when weight gain slows again. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ Between 6-12 months, the average weight gain of a breastfed baby is 1.75-2.75 oz a week. ๐Ÿ’. ๐‚๐จ๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ ๐Ÿ˜Œ Are your twins content after a feeding? Do they have that milk drunk appearance? This can be hard to judge at times, especially during times of cluster feeding and growth spurts where babies may return to the breast 45 minutes after a feed (or even sooner!) Observe for effective feeding & swallowing at the breast! Are the babies content for more than a couple hours at a time during some parts of the day and cluster feeding at others? Returning to the breast frequently is not automatically a sign of poor milk supply.
