A 43-year-old man has been arrested after allegedly importing almost one million cigarettes into New Zealand without paying duty, avoiding an estimated $1.4 million in taxes. He appeared in Manukau District Court after being taken into custody on August 25, when Customs and police carried out search warrants at multiple locations. The man faces charges of importing prohibited goods, defrauding Customs revenue, and possessing uncustomed items. The case began earlier in August when Customs intercepted two shipments from China at NZ Post’s Auckland Processing Centre. Both were falsely declared as clothing but instead contained cartons of the Chinese brand Double Happiness. The first shipment held 340,000 cigarettes and the second nearly 587,000, bringing the total to 927,000. Neither the man nor the company named on the consignments had the required import permits. Additional quantities of untaxed cigarettes were also uncovered during the search operation. Customs official Nigel Barnes said officers are seeing a rise in large-scale tobacco smuggling through air, sea and mail. “Customs is getting good successes at the Auckland Processing Centre – the new international mail processing facility – thanks to the systems and technology we’re using to inspect international parcels and goods before they’re released to the importers,” he said. “Anyone involved in cigarette smuggling should know there’s a very good chance that they will be caught and face the consequences.” Excise tax makes up about 80 percent of the retail price of cigarettes, a factor that authorities warn fuels black market demand. #nz
