@makingstridesau: A standing session with Maxy! 💜 @Max Lee has spasticity which we can manipulate with certain movements to either strengthen it, or reduce it, depending on what we are trying to achieve with a given exercise. In this video we show how exciting Max’s extension tone can allow him to hold independent knee extension during standing. This series includes tasks which involve rapid extension based movements and core engagement because that’s what we have found works well for Max. Later in the session we perform lower limb flexion based movements to try and calm Max’s tone down before he heads home. This included gait training with stim assisted hip and knee flexion, as well as a sustained quadriceps stretch in kneeling which can reduce power output from extensor muscles reducing the strength of Max’s lower body spasms. It’s important to note that learning to manage tone is often trial and error, and depends on the individuals response. Firing up Max’s extension tone prior to standing works well for him because he get’s a functional response. Individuals whose tone and spasms inhibits standing or gait may require tone reduction prior to performing these tasks. #sci #sciawareness #livingwithadisability #wheelchairlife #neuroscience #neuroplasticity #cureparalysis #neurorehabilitation #adaptiveequipment #scirehabilitation #quadriplegic #research #spinalcordinjuryrecovery #activitybasedtherapy #standing
