I've been on a flight that was struck twice - once on the nose and once on the wing, which I saw very clearly - a blue/white streak along the wing.

I saw lighting strike the left wing on the plane after 20 mins of flying and the pilot made a landing after 10 mins..

its not about the size of the pupil but rather the adaptation of the retina to the light that causes temporary blindness, the pupil is just a helper
