If you buy plumbing made for hemp, its already scratched like that from factory. Its to prevent the hemp from slipping. 😉

that's the correct way to install a water pipe using hemp. Rothenberger makes a tool for it that is pretty sweet

The wire on the garden hose is going to cut the garden hose. Just get a real hose clamp. They sell them at auto parts and hardware stores.

Scratching the thread's ist totally common in german plumbing. Did it a thousand times. Newer fittigs come already scratched.

Thats actually exactly how applying hemp to threads used to be done before teflon was created. Still common today in certain places

As a plumber scratching the thread doesn’t do anything bad, it’s more to help the hemp/tape stay in position as your doing up threads
