While the reality weighs heavy in our hearts that Tamy never got to experience everything that was waiting for him at the sanctuary, we know that for the time that our team was at the ecoparque, Tamy felt seen. Before he passed, he used his voice and rumbled for the first time – a sign that he was understanding that we saw his worth as an individual and that we were there to listen and respect what he had to tell us. After 10 years in the circus and 30 years at the former Mendoza Zoo, he had probably grown used to having people pass over him from above or glance down at him. He likely learned long ago that his voice had no effect on his life or his care, and he had gone silent. After our team began working with him, standing at his level and coming to him with profound respect, honesty, patience, and love, he began to speak. He did not pass away untouched by the sanctuary. Some part of him, of his individuality and his experience, felt seen and acknowledged, and we are grateful that when he left, he knew that he had power and worth simply for being himself. Episode 59 of our podcast, Global Rumblings, was recorded after Tamy’s passing at Ecoparque Mendoza and just before Kenya’s relocation. In this episode, Scott and Kat reflect on some of the obstacles that delayed his transfer and the social, political, and bureaucratic issues that can slow or halt an elephant’s relocation to the sanctuary.
