Just in time for Spooky Season, the #JackOLanternMushrooms #Omphalotusilludens were popping on my visit to Michigan. While checking out one of Gabrielle’s spots (@🍄Mushroom Auntie🍄 ) we came across these huge and brilliant clusters of the Saprobic mushrooms growing on downed logs and dead trees. Known to fruit large clusters, they have bright orange flesh, no partial veil, slightly decurrent gills (that run down the stem), and have an orangey/yellow spore print. . JoLs are distinctly different from Chanterelles (which have white spores & flesh) and Chicken of the Woods (a Polypore). Omphalotus could be confused for Gymnopilus (which also grow in large clumps at the base of dead trees, but have a rusty orange/brown spore print and a partial veil). . Omphalotus are toxic due to containing illudens, sesquiterpenes present in the mushroom. These mushrooms are acutely toxic and were used as a plot device in the “Phantom Thread“ movie to make the main character sick. Illudens are also carcinogenic, capable of causing DNA damage by arresting transcription. To me it looks like the illudens could intercalate into DNA, causing torsion in the double helix. . Omphalotus species are bioluminescent. They use the energy of a luciferin/luciferase to glow a ghostly green color. They are so bright you can see them at night with the naked eye. More mature Mushrooms globe writer, it has been hypothesized that insects are attracted to the light and help spread spores. However, the reason for this bioluminescence is still unclear. Omphalotus can also be used to make natural dyes. Depending on the pH and mordant used they can produce an array of colors from green to yellow to purple. . Joyed my trip to Michigan and getting to hang with Gabrielle and see some of her favorite hunts. Hope you guys enjoy this post and the mushroom ASMR. . . . #mushroomedu #mycology #biology
