My daughter did dance class at 3, she asked because of a preschool friend. But I never pushed sports.

I think one reason is for socialization (both for parents & kids). I think it’s a way to join a community because we lack community-belonging in US

I work in children’s athletics and so many parents think their kids will get a scholarship when so few actually do!

For me it was to get my daughter out of the house and moving her body. She only plays sports that she chooses I never chose for her.

Also, in the US(at least in the northeast), we don’t recommend sport specialization. We encourage playing multiple sports/cross training.

I was never super competitive but I danced from age 3 and played soccer starting around age 4-5 and loved it! it built good habits 🥰

Most sports don’t give full ride scholarships or even 1/2. Both gymnastics and football do and that’s where they are seeing things from.

I grew up in OH/PA in the early 2000s. I only did swim lessons as a toddler and didn’t play a sport until I was 6 bc we spent more time going to parks

I’m from Canada and sports scholarships aren’t a thing here yet a lot of kids play sports from young age. My super active 3yo loves playing sports

From what I've seen it was more to keep kids active, social skills,enjoy and give kids privileges parents didn't have. It could be regional too.
