When I was younger the ER near me would X-ray helmets for free after a drop/crash to check for cracks and tell if the helmet was still safe.

Yeah I wouldn’t advise that. If you drop your helmet best get it replaced. May not see a crack but trust every fall makes the helmet weaker.

In racing, if a crash is bad enough you are required to replace the helmet due to the outter shell possibly being damaged

No it’s just unsafe, a lot of helmets in the uk get micro cracks on the outside which decreases the shock absorption,l
