@dmd_spa: Case #543 : Gen decalcification/ defective restoration. Due to excessive and prolonged exposure to sugary substances there results a steady secretion of acidic biproduct due to bacterial metabolism. This acid alters the matrix of enamel weakening its crystaline strucure. This manifests as mottled, brittled areas on the surfaces of teeth indicative of the initial phase of cavitation. Restorations with planar margins are the best way to ensure an air tight seal preventing recurrent decay. Overcontoured margin allows for entrapment of debris resulting in staining and subsequent decay.
