Runa Anoskae was born in the industrial underbelly of Cortellia Station, a rotating Trade Federation hub near the Outer Rim, far from the spiritual traditions of her Mirialan heritage. Raised by a single mother who repaired long-haul cargo ships for a living, Runa grew up with the scent of plasma welds in her lungs and the hum of reactors in her ears. Her childhood was spent crawling through exhaust ducts and disassembling processors for scrap credits. She never learned the sacred patterns of her people—instead, she memorized wiring schematics and decryption sequences. By the age of 15, Runa had already illegally patched the nav system of a smuggler’s freighter in exchange for forged ident-chips. But a near-fatal reactor overload during one of those side gigs scorched half her right arm and got her arrested. Ironically, that same incident caught the attention of a Trade Federation recruiter—who saw not a criminal, but a savant. Through a “contract rehabilitation” program, Runa was conscripted into the Federation Tech Corps, where her talent with slicing, life-support calibration, and system integration quickly earned her clearance. She spent years climbing the ranks through the most unglamorous, dangerous, and remote postings—maintaining failing life support systems on icy mining moons, jury-rigging comm arrays in asteroid storms, and fighting off system-jackers in spice space. Now, stationed aboard the Vox Aridus, a mid-size hauler ferrying volatile goods through uncharted territory, Runa’s work is more vital—and more dangerous—than ever. The ship is old, patched together with outdated code and corrupt firmware, and the Federation’s grip on this section of the galaxy is loosening. Runa’s the only thing standing between the crew and a cold, dark end in deep space. But underneath her sarcastic bravado and expert hands, Runa hides secrets: she’s been siphoning encrypted files from the Federation for months—logs, coordinates, manifests—selling them to an unknown buyer who always pays in old Mirialan reliquaries.
