A big thing when you have a neurodivergent child is the concern around how the world sees them. Cos you love your kid no matter what, but those interactions with others, the glares or comments. So you try to minimize things they could possibly do in public to be so obviously « different ». Stimming takes on many forms- one example is arm/hand flapping that our son does, he also has auditory stims. It’s a self- regulation tool for him and most other autistic individuals. There was a time I just wanted him to stop doing it. Different can be considered cute when they’re teeny, but as they get older, there are expectations: behaviors and sounds that are « acceptable » or « normal ». It’s why historically autistic children were hidden from society, institutionalized. So I share so that when you see, or hear vocal stims, you understand and you’re not confused or surprised that a toddler, teen or adult is behaving differently. And while Stimming is often beneficial for the individual, some stimming can be harmful - self injurious behaviors like biting, hitting head etc. So of course for those behaviors, we work on the underlying triggers first- the underlying discomfort they are seeking to resolve. Trying to stop the calming mechanism (stimming) usually makes it worse because they are desperately trying to feel better and you don’t want to get in the way of that if you can’t offer an alternative solution. Anyways, I like to say there’s still a lot we don’t know. But we’re learning and sharing, more visibility, more awareness, more support, more understanding, more kindness. And when I see Kai’s flapping- I whisper into the air… just be you, just keep stimming. It’s definitely more for me than him, a reminder to myself. #autismdad #autismfamily #autismacceptance #stimming #autismawarness
