Mama Mustang is just one of thousands of horses that end up in the slaughter pipeline. While the trailer ride to Mexico is brutal, so are the weeks sometimes months leading up to it. They suffer injuries, are unable to sleep, barely eat. Most of these horses are flipped auction to auction - a lot of them ending up at Bowie. We were able to intercept Mama Mustang at a smaller local auction. She was in the hands of a trader & was going to be flipped again at Bowie the following week. Her sanctuary life proves rescue works & our dedication to these horses after the initial save, but $50,000 in vet bills blocks our ability to help more horses like her. There was a mare & foal at the location auction this past weekend that were in horrific shape with severe medical issues. I wanted to help them so bad, but my hands are tied. If we can cover these vet expenses - we can continue to help more horses. A little Skipper recap. My heart wants us to take every senior horse that comes across our path. But at the same time I don’t know if my heart can continue to fall so deeply for these creatures and endure loss after loss. The seniors will always and forever have the most special place in my heart. Skipper has received an entire intake work up which included a dental float, sheath cleaning, blood work, farrier care and a strategic diet to fill in his ribs and top line. He’s currently in with Sam during the day and stalled at night but unfortunately Sam has made it clear that Skipper is not welcome in his paddock. Things are safe but we will be reworking our herds when the weather breaks. In true sanctuary horses receive prompt and in depth medical care. But their emotional state is considered as well. Skippers happiness is our top priority.
