This isn’t my usual kind of edit and it’s really rushed and I’ll definitely keep sticking to jjk, but The Summer Hikaru Died has been catching my attention more and more—and of course, there are way too many parallels, but also striking contrasts with jjk. And you know me by now—I have to unpack them. We often talk about the theory that Geto asked Gojo to curse him at the end, as a reference to Rika and Yuta—so that Geto could have haunted Gojo in the form of a curse. But Gojo didn’t curse him. Quite the opposite. Gojo probably said something meaningful and tender before killing him—something that, luckily, we’ll never get to know. But at the same time, Gojo’s love ended up cursing Geto anyway—because he didn’t destroy his body, which allowed Kenjaku to take it over and exploit him even in death. And that ended up affecting Gojo too—because if Geto hadn’t been taken over by Kenjaku, none of it would have happened. Not just Gojo’s sealing, but literally everything else. What I find interesting so far (I’m currently reading tshd, so I’m sure I’ll find more later lol) is that Hikaru—just like Geto—wanted to live only because of Yoshiki. Yoshiki was literally his last thought, and the only reason he reached out to the entity. And just like Yoshiki is settling for a false version of Hikaru as long as he gets to keep him by his side, Hikaru is settling for having something else inside his body just to stay by Yoshiki’s side. The thing is, this is deeply affecting Yoshiki’s sanity—because he desperately wants to grieve Hikaru, but he physically can’t, since he’s still there. And it made me think of Gojo as soon as he’s unsealed, when his first thought is literally to mourn Suguru’s body (“Actually, I’ve got things to do before I fight him. I’d like to mourn Suguru’s body…”) but he physically can’t. So, whether the entity inside your significant other still loves you or not—it’s messed up. And it completely shatters your mental state. I think tshd gives us a great representation of how grief works—the concept of wanting to let go, but not being able to. That scene of Yoshiki crying because he misses Hikaru so badly, but still stopping the false version of him from leaving it’s the perfect image of it in my opinion. Another parallel which I included here is Yoshiki and Gojo both being there during Hikaru and Geto’s death and witnessing it. But the tragic contrast is that, while Yoshiki is the only one in six months who notices that it’s not the real Hikaru (and reasonably so, given the fact that he also saw his body), Gojo is sealed because for a moment he really thought Kenjaku was Geto, even though he literally killed him. Eventually, both Yoshiki’s and Gojo’s hearth and soul knew otherwise though I guess.
