I wanted to take a moment to share a personal story that reflects my journey of cultural identity and heritage, something that has shaped who I am today. Growing up in a small farming community in Washington State, I always felt a bit different from those around me. Being tall and distinctive in appearance, I was frequently asked where I was from. My maternal grandparents, who spoke Spanish, had originally moved to Washington from Texas many years ago for work. Despite my strong ties to the Mexican culture, I often found myself mistaken for Polynesian, Filipino, or other Asian backgrounds. As a child and even into adulthood, the question “Where are you from?” was one I often found frustrating or confusing. I would typically respond with “Othello, Washington,” not fully grasping the deeper context behind the question. However, over time, my understanding of my roots has deepened significantly. Recently, I shared a photo on Facebook that received affectionate comments from my eldest aunt, my mom’s sister. As I looked through my aunt’s Facebook page, I saw photos of my cousins and my aunt’s grandchildren, and I couldn’t help but notice the striking resemblance in their eyes. It reminded me of my late grandmother Linda, whose eyes seem to shine through each of them. It is often said that eyes are the window to the soul, and in our family, our eyes tell the story of our heritage — the heritage of the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas. Getting to know my family from Texas and embracing this rich background has helped me truly find my identity. To this day, when asked where I am from, I proudly say, “I’m Native American.” It has become a source of pride and strength for me. Thank you for taking the time to read about my journey. I hope it resonates with you in some way or inspires you to explore and embrace your own heritage. #nativeamericantiktok #nativetiktoks #nativeamerican #lipanapache #lipanapachetribeoftexas #nativeamericanjewelry
