I feel like the key detail in ladybird that makes a difference in most irl emotionally abusive parental relationships was that Ladybird is her CHILD. They were both struggling, but Ladybird is just a kid and her mom was a kid once, too. Emotional neglect is often justified with “well they did it back,” but that’s often the result of reactive abuse from a child desperate for parental affection. Children need emotionally stable figure sometimes, not just life coaches. It can be exhausting to have a relationship like that. Greta Gerwig is phenomenal, I feel like she may have experience with mother issues herself
