@alinazbv: As a fan of New England covered bridges, I was thrilled to discover that Virginia boasts some equally impressive ones. This one, framed by fall foliage, is truly a hidden gem! Filmed 10/21/23 Meem's Bridge, spanning 204 feet, proudly holds the title of Virginia's longest covered bridge. And here's the coolest part - it's the only one you can still drive through! A visit here is like stepping back in time. Close by, you can catch the buzz of today's Interstate 81. This bridge takes its name from the Meem family, who once owned extensive lands in this area. Built between 1892 and 1893, the Meem's Bottom Bridge used local materials for its arch and stone supports, extending 10 feet beneath the riverbed. The bridge stood for more than 80 years until Halloween night in 1976 when vandals set it on fire. But it was saved and rebuilt, reinforcing it with steel and concrete. It welcomed cars once more in 1979 and remains open to this day.
