Honestly I think that sound like way too much work. I usually use the shape builder tool. Hold alt, and click the lines you don't want

Shift + M to use the shaper tool and delete the unwanted strokes with a click and drag

I just outline the strokes turn them into a shape and use the shape builder tool to cut

You can also use the intertwine option. That's the beauty of Illustrator there are multiple options for multiple workarounds

Great tip! I know everyone’s saying ‘but the shape builder tool…’ but that can leave stray points and other mess sometimes so a back up metho is smart
