@precioushill_: Tantrums CAN turn into Meltdowns. Autism Meltdowns are an involuntary response to nervous system overload. This highly dysregulated state is not behavioral, but a physical manifestation of a neurobiological reaction. With toddlers an autistic meltdown looks much like a temper tantrum but can be more intense. #asd #autismmeltdown #autismspectrumdisorder #autism #autismsigns #toddlers

My 2 yr old step son has mild autism. He has meltdowns like this but he will throw things and throw his body around (banging his head, kicking the walls). I have been treating him like I do my 3 year old son where I give him space to regulate and calm down on his bed… I come in and check on him every 5 mins and speak to him each time. Today, he threw all his pillows off the bed and I told him once he calms down to pick up the pillows when he is ready and once he does he can come back out and play. I went in and he had the pillows on his bed laying on them. I acknowledged that as good behavior since he listened and seemed to regulate himself. I have been teaching him to regulate himself by breathing and talking him through the tantrum but giving him space as well. Idk if I’m doing things the right way. Sometimes the tantrums can last 30 mins but I keep consistent and patient. What made me sad is I did the same technique but he was visibly trembling and shaking. I felt so bad. I’m never mean or angry. I treat my son the same and he is really good at self soothing and even will validate other kids emotions. Is the trembling/shaking normal or should I stay in the room and soothe him instead of leaving him alone to calm down. He eventually calmed down and I checked on him and told him I loved him and that he was a sweet boy. He ended up falling asleep.
