@brutamerica: A pond on the island of Maui has mysteriously turned pink, but the phenomenon may not be cause for celebration. Since October 30, scientists have been monitoring the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on Maui. Initially, refuge staff suspected toxic algae to be the source of the unusual color, but analysis by teams at the University of Hawaii ruled that out. Scientists are speculating that the pink color has been caused by a single-celled organism called halobacteria, which thrives in bodies of water with high salt content. As a result of the ongoing drought on the island, officials at the refuge believe the Waikapu Stream that feeds into the pond hasn’t been replenishing it and raising its water levels. DNA analysis will provide definitive identification of the organism at the root of the phenomenon. The wildlife refuge is a protected wetland for two endangered Hawaiian bird species, the stilt and the coot, and serves as a resting place for migratory birds during the winter.
