There are trash cans next to almost every vending machine… yes, having to pay in cash is a nightmare when the denominations are ridiculous too.

Only annoying thing with the cash is the change. They have up to $5 for change so coins add up fast. I had to get a coin purse.

Yes Japan is more cash based than most developed nations but in Tokyo you can use your metro card as a debit card… you can add it to Apple Pay too
