@cambridgeuniversity: 🌏 By 2050, there'll be about 10 billion humans on Earth. How can we produce enough food to eat without destroying the planet? 🌱 By growing a many more legumes. Particularly the forgotten ones. Why? Current food production uses huge amounts of nitrogen fertilisers, poisoning land, water and air. But legumes work with microbes in the soil to take nitrogen from the air (called 'fixing') and create their own fertiliser. Dr Nadia Radzman found that by growing 'forgotten' legumes like the African yam bean, we can greatly reduce our nitrogen use and increase sustainable food sources. Dr Radzman was pitching at the Falling Walls Lab earlier this year, hosted by our Department of Engineering. #CambridgeUniversity #ClimateChange #CambridgeResearch #UniversityOfCambridge #Malaysia

This is brilliant! More should be done in rediscovering forgotten foods that can grow in high temperatures and water stressed areas.
