What if 'pass' was actually the adjective all along? Passports are ports. What kind of port? The kind that lets you pass, a port of pass, passport

In Fr, the adj can be before or after the noun. IDK why it’s so weird when someone says it wrong. Reminds me of your video about adj order in Eng.

Yes it’s from French, but that’s not the reason it’s pass port. In French passe is not a noun being described by the adjective port. Passe is a verb

In French the “pass” isn’t a noun, it’s a verb. In english it would be closer to “port passer”, a thing that passes a port.

I believe most passports still have French translations because that traditionally was the primary language of diplomacy.

Must be same reason for why it’s “pastime” not “time pass”. In Portuguese, for example, the word is “passa-tempo”

Also, "porte" as in door or gate, not sea port. A pass that allows you access to a city or building ... or through a border.
