Jeanne d’Arc, or Joan of Arc, was born around 1412 in a small farming village called Domrémy in northeastern France. She was the daughter of Jacques and Isabelle d’Arc, simple peasants. She didn’t go to school and couldn’t read or write, but she was deeply religious. France at that time was in chaos, torn apart by the Hundred Years’ War between France and England, and much of northern France was under English control. When Jeanne was thirteen years old, she began to experience something she called her voices. While she was in her father’s garden, she said she saw a bright light and heard the voice of Saint Michael the Archangel, soon joined by Saint Catherine of Alexandria and Saint Margaret of Antioch. At first, these visions told her to be good, to pray, and to live purely. But as time passed, their message became clear: God had chosen her to save France and to help crown Charles VII as king. At sixteen, she left home to seek out a local French commander. Most men laughed at her, a teenage peasant girl claiming divine visions, but her determination impressed a few important people. She eventually met Charles VII, who secretly tested her by disguising himself among his courtiers. Jeanne recognized him immediately, which amazed everyone. Theologians examined her in Poitiers and found her sincere. Soon after, Charles gave her armor, a sword, and a white banner embroidered with the names of Jesus and Mary. In 1429, she joined the French army at the Siege of Orléans. Against all odds, the French won. Jeanne didn’t kill anyone herself, but her faith and courage inspired the soldiers. People began to call her “The Maid of Orléans.” After Orléans, she led Charles to Reims, where he was crowned king, fulfilling one of her visions. But her success made her enemies. In 1430, during a battle near Compiègne, she was captured by the Burgundians, who were allied with the English, and sold to them. The English put her on trial for heresy, claiming her visions were false and accusing her of witchcraft and wearing men’s clothing. She was condemned and, in 1431, at only nineteen years old, she was burned at the stake in Rouen. Witnesses said she called out the name of Jesus as she died.
