GM says fluid in the transmission is for lifetime. They don’t have a specific maintenance schedule for the gears

I thought it was actually the final drive that lubricates that from the oil splashing over and lubricating that.

if the customer goes to a good good shop.... they will tell you that. if they go to small shops they are scared of leaks like that..

That shaft only spins unless it’s in 4x4…… depending on what you had it when you heard it yourself. If it’s In 2wd that’s not the case, but it’s obviously leaking.

I learned from my Uncle 1970. Check the rear differential.😳 Back in the day. A lot of rear wheel drive.
