This is also our reality. This is Dylan when he’s overwhelmed, overstimulated, or frustrated - and yes, he wears a helmet to protect himself because sometimes he bangs his head. It’s not easy to show this. But this is part of life with significant disabilities. It’s part of caring for someone who’s nonverbal and has no safe or easy way to tell us what he’s feeling. And we want to be clear: he is not being mistreated. Dylan prefers to be on the floor - it helps him feel grounded and safe. He pushes himself around because he likes the freedom of going where he wants, on his own terms. This isn’t the smiling highlight reel - but it’s still full of love, effort, and respect for who Dylan is. If you’ve ever had to choose safety over appearances, or had to explain your child’s behavior to strangers who don’t understand - we see you.
