@habeeb_akande1: Black History and Islam...In 2012, I named my first book, Illuminating the Darkness, after the same name as Ibn al-Jawzi's classic Arabic book, Tanwir al-Ghabash fi fadl al-Sudan wa al-Habash (Illuminating the Darkness regarding the virtues of Black people and Ethiopians) Abu Faraj Ibn al-Jawzi (d. 1201) was a prominent Muslim scholar and prolific Islamic writer from Iraq. Ibn al-Jawzi, who was not black, wrote this book to raise the self-esteem of dark-skinned Africans due to the anti-black sentiment which existed in Arab-Muslim communities. Similar to the 9th century Afro-Arab scholar Al-Jahiz, Ibn al-Jawzi is amongst a number of Sunni Muslim scholars to write a book on the merits of blackness in Islam, including biographies of black figures, history of Africa, and the beauties of black women. Whilst Islam as a religion is against skin colour prejudice and racial discrimination, anti-black sentiment has long existed in Arab, Persian and Asian Muslim communities. To address this, Ibn Jawzi himself wrote "I saw a group of eminent Ethiopians who were disheartened because of their (dark) color. I explained to them that respect is granted in accordance with good deeds rather than by a pleasant appearance, thus I wrote this book to recall the virtues of a great many of the Ethiopians and black people." Al-Jahiz is another inspirational Muslim scholar and prolific writer who wrote an unapologetic book on the status of black people in Islam. Al-Jahiz was arguably the first Muslim scholar to write about black excellence in the Muslim tradition. Later on, scholars such as Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti wrote similar treatises on the virtues of black people.Thank you Dr Omar Suleiman for acknowledging my work and raising awareness of this important topic, particularly among non-black Muslims who may not be aware of the intellectual contribution and scholarship of black peoples. May Allah reward you for your work in this word and the Hereafter.Leave a legacy...#IlluminatingtheDarkness #Alhamdulillah #TanwiralGhabash Credit: 'Black & Noble - A Study of Important Black Figures in Islam - ILF Texas' YouTube/IlmFlix Recorded on 16 February 2014
