I control my words/thoughts to have an even better race!! (Especially when my mind is against me!) I have a rule during races-do not complain. Mostly because I’m choosing to do this, but also because the second I start complaining I let the negative thoughts completely take over. I’ve done this since my first Ironman I truly think it’s how I got through 6.5 hours on the bike in the pouring rain and cold and 8 hours of running through the night in the rain during my 100 mile ultra. It is VERY normal to have tons of negative thoughts pop up in a race and training. (At least for me!) 🙌What I do with that is the key. If a negative thought pops up, I immediately either “cancel” it out with 3 positive ones OR say a positive one or two out loud! Example Thought: “I do not know if I can do this.” Counter thoughts: “I got this” “this is easy” “I’m trained for this” 5 days until the Chicago Marathon and some doubt naturally fills my mind, but I practice the above method to prepare my brain for race day!!
