The cathedral stands above the site of the Tsar’s mortal wound. Here, on the embankment of the Catherine Canal (now the Griboyedov Canal), the emperor was mortally wounded by the Narodnaya Volya revolutionaries on March 1, 1881, old style. The tragic event that shocked the entire country became the impetus for the creation of the Temple-Monument, the Temple of the people’s repentance for the murder of their king.
