Sand is the next best option, I live in the sticks in northeast Ohio, they salt the main roads and spread sand on the back roads here.

Funny think about salt is it doesn’t expire. Up here in MI we buy it in bulk and just store it till it’s needed. But buying salt spreaders would be expensive

Wisconsin person here. salt will do nothing for you if it's frozen already. we spray a brine mix on the roads before a snow event.
