A British Sikh woman in her 20s was brutally raped in Oldbury, UK on 9th September 2025. The attackers, two white men told her, “You don’t belong in this country, get out.” This horrific act has sent shockwaves through the British South Asian community, raising urgent questions about safety, racism, and the rise of far-right politics in the UK. This assault is not an isolated incident. It reflects a disturbing trend of increasing hate crimes against minorities, particularly as far-right groups gain momentum. The Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, has made significant electoral gains, amplifying anti-immigrant rhetoric and fostering an environment where such violence can occur. In response to the attack, over 450 Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations have signed a letter to political leaders, urging urgent government action on anti-Sikh hate. Sikh organisations have announced a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects. Local MPs, including Preet Kaur Gill, have expressed concern over the rise in hate crimes, with some constituents reporting racial or verbal attacks for the first time. This incident underscores the need for continued efforts to combat racism and ensure the safety of all communities. The British Sikh Report 2023 indicates that Sikhs in the UK face challenges related to discrimination and underrepresentation, highlighting the importance of inclusive policies and community support. So while the UK remains a diverse and multicultural society, incidents like the one in Oldbury serve as a stark reminder of the work still needed to foster true equality and safety for all its citizens and better protection for the South Asian diaspora. Do you still feel safe in the UK?
