He began feeding the raccoons on his property after his wife passed away in 2003. She had been feeding the raccoons since the 90's and Blackwood says that before she died, she asked that he continue to feed them. So he did. Blackwood is a retired RCMP officer. He says he started to attempt to monetize the videos on YouTube back in 2011, but wasn't getting a ton of views or seeing any money. But on an ordinary Tuesday evening, after uploading a video of himself feeding raccoons, something he does every single day (lol), that changed. His 'mobbed by raccoons' video has since hit 32M views. His channel has well over half a million subscribers, with total video views over 50M. Pretty crazy! Blackwood says he is 'no longer retired' because feeding the raccoons and uploading the videos has turned into a full-time job. Good thing, too, since he claims to spend over $4000/month on food for the raccoons. hahaha WHAT. So what is he feeding them? Ohhh you know, traditional Nova Scotian dishes like Hamburger Helper, Kraft Dinner, and A1 pizza from Pictou. (Donated by the pizzeria, apparently.) He also feeds them grapes, but apparently the raccoons only like red grapes and have no appetite for the green ones. Curious! He says they weigh between 30 and 60 lbs and it's not uncommon for 25-30 of them to show up at a time. I don't know exactly how much money James Blackwood is making off this whole endeavour - but does anyone have a guess? I read somewhere that you can make up to $6000 USD per million views on YouTube - is it possible he's made over $250,000 CAD on that one video? Someone please enlighten me in the comments... Anyway, it's not all without controversy. Many advise against feeding wildlife so there's no shortage of people trying to dissuade James Blackwood from doing this, but whatever you do, don't try this in the comments of his videos!
