Today’s Love Black History Fact On August 2, 1882, Dr. Booker T. Washington* married Fannie Norton Smith in Zion Baptist Church in Malden, West Virginia. He was 26 years old and she was 24. Fannie, who was also from West Virginia and “a product of Hampton Institute,” was taught by Booker. Likely during her time at Hampton, she began to date him, though we don’t know exactly when that happened. As the Ebony article “The Three Wives of Booker T. Washington” from September 1982 makes clear, Fannie “provided crucial elements that Washington needed at critical moments in his life.” By then, Booker was already in Alabama at Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute, which would later become Tuskegee University. Fannie immediately moved to Tuskegee. Their home, which was known as The Oaks, became “a home for our teachers, who now had been increase to four in number.” It wasn’t a glamorous setup, but as the article says, “it was a boon to Principal Washington,” who finally had someone to help establish a home and manage the school’s growing needs. The following year, in 1883, they had a baby. Fannie gave birth to Portia Washington who would be Booker’s only daughter. But sadly, on May 4, 1884, just 21 months into their marriage, Fannie died. Booker wrote in his autobiography Up From Slavery “after earnest and constant work in the interests of the school, together with her housekeeping duties, my wife passed away.” Some said it was due to consumption, which was just another way of saying she died of tuberculosis (then, that was a catchall phrase for a variety of ailments). Others believed she died from a fall or exhaustion triggered by childbirth (aka postpartum depression). Either way, it was sad. Booker would remarry to a woman named Olivia Davidson two years later. * Disclaimer: I am calling Dr. Booker T. Washington Booker or Booker T. instead because while I acknowledge his accolades, he was likely just Booker to his wife, Fannie.
