As a Californian I tell people all the time to get renters insurance. It’s like $5 a month. We’re supposed to get t to rent but few places verify you have it.

Right! In Texas renters are required to have renters insurance regardless to the area that the property is in.

I've rented in VA, MT, and WA. No landlord required renters insurance. Is it a a good idea to have it? Yes. But you can't assume a person has it.
