This is the stage most people never see.
The confusion begins early—sometimes before a person even knows what “gay” means. They just know something feels… off. Different. And in a culture that assumes everyone is straight, that difference can quickly become terrifying.

For many gay Latter-day Saints, this stage starts in childhood and stretches for years, even decades. They pray, fast, and bargain with God. They try to change what they feel. They tell themselves they’re just admiring someone, or they’re just going through a phase. They don’t know who to talk to, and even if they did, they wouldn’t know what to say. It’s common for people in this stage to appear completely fine on the outside while carrying immense fear and confusion inside. And sometimes, the shame is compounded by more than just orientation. If someone also has ADHD, a learning disorder, or any other mental health struggle, that too can make them feel different—and that shame can tangle together in a way that’s overwhelming. They might think all of their distress is because they’re gay, when really, they’re carrying the weight of many intersecting challenges. In some cases, the shame itself leads to anxiety or depression, which makes everything even harder to untangle.

Here’s a glimpse at what this often-hidden stage looks like—and how to support those who are silently navigating it. If you’ve never experienced this yourself, I hope it helps you see others more clearly. If you have... I hope you feel seen. INFO: This carousel is based on the CASS Model of Identity Development. The slides were adapted from a full chapter in my book *Expanding the Borders of Zion*, which explores each stage in much greater depth.

*My book is 50% off with free shipping this month.* I’ve tagged it in this post. It’s a resource I believe in—and I hope it helps. #lgbtq #lds #june #ally #thechurchofjesuschristoflatterdaysaints
