The v6 ford pintos had a ford 8.8 which with a 32 spine axle can be just as strong as a 12bolt gm

I would gotten a junkyard 8.8 then cut down a ford driveshaft to save money.

look for an old CVPI in a junk yard, some had 6 link rear ends

Don’t upgrade to the 5r55s had a 3rd gear ratio stock problem that makes it over time shift wrong and eventually grinds away!
