It's a scribe grip. it removes extension fatigue from phalangeal joints. The flexed position is much more comfortable over long periods of time. and it allows for greater control of the pencil tip

With this grip the movement comes from the shoulder. Thumb movement is minimal. Classical artists also draw from the shoulder. It's learnable.

I think it probably has to do with preventing arthritis in some way because she needs to preserve the integrity of her fingers for playing instruments.

I had used that writing method when in school, over 20yrs ago. I remember it was way More comfortable on my wrist. I can't get my placement right now, but I have had 4 surgeries on my arm since then.

I’ve been doing it that way all my life. It’s one of the options given to us in grade school when they were teaching us 3 different ways to hold our pencils and to choose the one most comfortable
